What Is Residential Treatment?

On the spectrum of addiction treatment, residential treatment centers (RTC’s) are considered to be level 3 care. Most programs provide 24/7 supervision and are designed to last between 30-90 days. Importantly, the quality of residential programs can vary greatly in the amenities they provide. A place in Malibu where famous celebrities attend provides more amenity options like a spa or private gym. Conversely, your standard RTC will provide the basic necessities, like towels, bed/bed sheets, toiletries and maybe a gym membership to the local rec center or YMCA. Both of these environments are designed for people who are struggling to stay sober for more than a few days at a time. They are an excellent option for someone coming out of a detox facility or need additional support that an outpatient setting can’t provide. Moreover, the overarching goal of these programs is to provide stabilization, education and discharge planning.

Firstly, stabilization refers to being medically stable. If you require medication assisted therapy (MAT) or medical assistance, RTC’s can help. Secondly, the program aims to provide psychoeducation on addiction. Topics usually include dialectical behavioral therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, relapse education, helps fix stereotypes and informs individuals about post acute withdrawal symptoms. Each clinical curriculum can vary greatly but they typically all include this information. Lastly, there’s discharge planning. This includes educating clients on strategies for preventing relapse once you leave the program. If someone has gone to RTC many times or is currently stabilized, educated and has a relapse prevention plan, then a residential treatment center might not be an appropriate level of care.

How Do I Pay For Treatment

Fortunately, most residential treatment centers are designed to take insurance. When contacting a program, be sure you ask them what insurance carriers they are in network with and make sure you know the details of your insurance plan. If you don’t have insurance, treatment programs will have a cash pay option. Be warned, most places cost between 1-2k per day. Additionally, most insurance carriers and insurance plans will usually cover between 14-21 days of treatment.
